Psych Skills for Fitness Pros, Volume 2

As a licensed psychologist and a certified addictions counselor, I’ve been practicing helping people change for over 20 years. I’ve learned that while it's important to understand clients’ psychology, the process of change, and the nature of motivation, it’s also important for me - and other practitioners - to know our own minds.
Thanks to my training, I’ve had supervision, therapy, and mentorship in order to understand and work with my thinking style, my emotional dynamics, and my habits and tendencies. This self-understanding helps me do my best work with my clients.
As I’ve worked more and more in the fitness industry over the past 10 years, I’ve realized that other kinds of people-helpers get NO education or support in learning and understanding themselves!
And even more impactful, I noticed that most of the questions I’d be asked in consultation and workshops with coaches were about managing one’s own psychology. Coaches would ask me:
“How can I set better limits with my clients?”
“Why do I feel so exhausted by a client who is negative and critical?”
“What do I do when I feel overwhelmed by having so much programming, emails, and social media posts to get to?!”
Interview with Dr. Sarah Ellis-Duval, DPT and owner of Core Exercise Solutions
